Below are some shots of the fire that woke us up this morning. These photos were taken by a neighbor who lives a little closer to where the fire was.

iPhone
It happened. I ordered an iPhone. Actually, we ordered two. I decided to give up HBO to offset some of the cost.
Anyway, it's in the mail.

hmm...
In the last week I've sent 2 mini-Moleskines through the wash. I'm not sure what that says about me.
One was nearly full of notes that are all now lost; I cried.

i promise...
...this won't turn into a blog where all I do is talk about my new baby (or one that never gets updated, as it appears it is now), but yesterday, at Trader Joe's, an older woman followed my wife and baby around the store. After awhile, she turned to my wife and said, "can I have a picture of your baby to send to my sister."
I was a little creeped out. Izabella is cute, but who asks a stranger for a picture of her baby?

nobody saw it...
That means I didn't really crash on my bike two days ago. I don't have road rash on my hip and elbow and I did not have to stop at the bike shop to get my shifter fixed. It never happened.
A crash is a funny thing, usually there is that instant when you know you're going down and can't do a damned thing about it.

how many days has it been?
Today I stopped off at Trader Joe's for some essentials and the checker asked me if I had had a good weekend. For a second I looked at him blankly before I realized that it was Monday, "did you get a chance to relax?"
Not really. I left work on Wednesday afternoon and spent a few hours at home before we ran off to the hospital on Wednesday evening; by 4:08 Thursday morning I was a father (proud as can be). So, I haven't really slept for more than a couple hours at a time in the last few days and it's gotten to the point where I have no idea when one day ends and next begins.
I'm required back in the office in 8 weeks or so, but I'm not really sure how I'm going to know when to show up (I already know I never want to leave my little girl). Hopefully someone will email me or something when it's time to head back. We'll see...
I'll post again in another time, I'm just not sure I'll know what time it is.

slowin' down
I reckon I'll be a little slower on the posts for the next few days. The new baby is here and I'm a little distracted...
Izabella was born on July 10th and she is home and doing well (there might be one person who reads this blog who didn't know that already).
I am still writing so hopefully I'll have some more scrap fiction to put up one day.

this is why...
...I got into cycling. I still remember 'the look' Armstrong gives Ulrich:
As a note, Armstrong says he wasn't looking at Ulrich. According to Armstrong he was just checking to see where his team was.

le tour...
This morning I have a whole new excuse for not posting in the last few days, Le Tour de France. It is true that, for the third year in a row, the previous winner is not riding and many of the big names of cycling have been taken down by doping allegations or signing contracts with teams that have been banned by the race officials. It is also true that cycling, even in America, is all about selling shit. Despite those two things I'm amazed at what these athletes can do over three weeks (more than 2000 miles).
My only prediction is that the new American team, Team Columbia, will surprise some folks and do quite well.

out of office reply
I've been feeling a little under the weather for the last week or so. I say that as explanation for my near silence over the last few days. Needless to say, with the pending arrival of our first baby and the illness, I've been a little distracted.
Scrap Paper Fiction and more returning soon.

it gives me a headache
I'm beginning to think that John McCain's voice is even more annoying than ol' GW's.
